Google Ads or SEO: Which Should a Cork Business Spend On First?
They solve different problems on different timescales. The answer depends on how soon you need the phone to ring.
The short answer
Google Ads delivers visibility immediately and stops the moment you stop paying. SEO takes three to six months to show meaningful movement and keeps working after the spend stops. A business that needs enquiries this month should start with ads; a business building an asset should start with SEO; most benefit from both.
- Google Ads: visibility today, cost per click, stops when the budget stops
- SEO: three to six months to movement, compounds, survives a pause
- Ads management: €400–€900 per month, plus your ad spend
- The honest test: how long can you wait for the first enquiry?
Start with ads when timing forces it
A new business with no rankings, a seasonal offer with a deadline, or a product you are not certain anyone wants — all three argue for paid search. You find out within a week whether there is demand at a price that works.
That is genuinely valuable information, and no amount of keyword research substitutes for it.
Start with SEO when the maths favours patience
If your cost per click is high and your margin is thin, paid search can be structurally unprofitable no matter how well it is managed. Ranking organically for the same terms removes the per-click cost entirely.
The same applies if you are in a market where you expect to be operating in five years. Rankings you earn now keep paying; clicks you buy now do not.
Use the paid data to aim the organic work
This is the part most businesses miss. A month of Google Ads tells you precisely which search terms produce enquiries rather than just traffic — real conversion data on real queries.
That is the best possible brief for which pages to build and which terms to target. Running ads first and SEO second, in that order, is often cheaper overall than guessing.
Where the budget usually leaks
Most underperforming accounts we see share the same handful of faults:
- No negative keywords, so the budget goes on “free”, “jobs” and “DIY” searches
- Broad match with no supervision, matching to anything vaguely adjacent
- Conversion tracking that was never set up, so nobody knows what worked
- Ads pointing at the homepage instead of a page about the thing advertised
The landing page decides the outcome
Both channels send people to a page, and that page decides whether the money was worth spending. A well-targeted click landing on a slow, unclear page is wasted at exactly the same rate as an untargeted one.
If the traffic is arriving and the enquiries are not, the problem has moved to the page — which is web design and conversion work, not more traffic.
Where this fits: Google Ads & PPC
Google Ads and PPC management runs paid search campaigns that deliver visibility immediately, while organic SEO rankings compound over months. Typical investment is €400–€900 per month.
