E-commerce SEO for Irish Online Stores: Where to Start

Category pages earn most of the traffic and get least of the attention. That is usually the whole opportunity.

The short answer

E-commerce SEO is the work of making an online shop rank for commercial searches and convert the traffic it earns. For most Irish stores the biggest available gain is in category pages, which attract the majority of qualified search volume and are usually the thinnest pages on the site.

  • Biggest opportunity: category and collection pages
  • Most common technical problem: faceted navigation generating thousands of crawlable URLs
  • Most common content problem: manufacturer product descriptions used verbatim
  • Typical investment: €1,200–€3,000 per month

Category pages are the ones that rank

People search for categories far more than for individual products — “waterproof walking boots” gets searched vastly more often than any single model name. Yet the category page is usually a grid of products with a heading and nothing else.

Give it a genuine introduction explaining what is in the category and how to choose, buying guidance that answers the obvious questions, and internal links to the subcategories that matter. That is on-page work applied to the highest-value pages you have.

Faceted navigation quietly destroys crawl budget

Filters for size, colour, brand and price generate a URL for every combination. A shop with a few hundred products can produce tens of thousands of crawlable addresses, nearly all near-duplicates.

Google then spends its crawl allocation on those instead of your real pages. Decide deliberately which filter combinations deserve an indexable URL — usually a small number with real search demand — and block or canonicalise the rest. This is technical SEO, and on a large store it is the highest-impact work available.

Manufacturer descriptions are on every competitor’s site too

If you sell products you did not manufacture, the supplied description is on every other retailer’s page for the same item. There is no version of that page that deserves to rank above the others.

You do not need to rewrite everything. Rewrite the products that actually matter — the ones with margin, search volume, or a reason to choose you — and let the long tail sit on the standard copy.

Product schema earns you the rich result

Price, availability and review markup are what produce the enhanced listings in search results. They do not lift rankings directly and they change the click-through rate noticeably, which shows up as traffic either way.

It has to be accurate. Marking up a price you are not charging or stock you do not have is a route to a manual action.

When paid search is the better first move

Organic e-commerce SEO is slow — three to six months before it compounds. If you need revenue this quarter, or you are testing whether a product line has demand at all, Google Ads answers that in days rather than months.

The two are complementary. Paid tells you which terms convert; that data is the best possible brief for where to spend the organic effort.

Where this fits: E-commerce SEO

E-commerce SEO optimises product and category pages, shopping feeds and site structure so an online shop ranks for commercial searches and converts the traffic it earns. Typical investment is €1,200–€3,000 per month.
